I too grew up (in nyc) and it seemed to me the only wild bird I knew. So I love this.

I am so glad it resonated with you. It occurred to me after writing this poem that the pigeons of NYC were brought there as mail carriers and most likely just kind of left over from that time. That, and I learned they actually like to be among humans.

Years later now and in a different city, we get ridiculous joy out of a pair or grey doves building a nest over our mailbox, bird poop and all - every year. They remind me of our pigeons in nyc..

I love the idea of ridiculous joy from doves making a nest on a mailbox.

Corey,

I often feel these poses when reading your descriptive content-a very enjoyable experience that evokes my love of yoga. This is a pose that Janine often teaches in her classes as as a senior, I appreciate that I still have the ability to open my chest to the sky and have the flexibility to stretch out my back when bringing my chest down over my knee. Gratitude to you and Janine both 💜

So good, Corie! I love Pigeon pose, and you have done a beautiful tribute. I always thought of them as rats with wings too. I lived in NYC in my 20s, but visited family there throughout my childhood.

Lately in class I have been playing with an active form of Pigeon, pressing the front knee into the floor and lifting upward. Holding that for a few breaths, then surrendering to gravity and melting into the pose in the more prone version. It feels awesome. Thanks for the shoutout! 💜

Oh I love this! A poem for a pigeon. I'm glad I'm not the only one. You are awesome.

I wrote this one 2 years ago.

Bobbing their tiny head.

They made peace in the city.

Called doves by the elders

Iridescence and in flight.

But sky rats

By city dwellers.

Their wide eyed glance

Says “you are the ridiculous ones”
