What is self-love, really? When you break it down.
I don’t profess to know...
but I work to practice it, embody it
every day.
It is an essential part of the golden rule.
“Love your neighbor as yourself” (Lev. 19:18).
But what does it mean to love yourself?
When I used to hear that, I would make my worried uh-oh stress face. Why? Because I knew that I was unkind to myself. And that I was ashamed of it.
You see…. I didn’t love myself. I had heard of this perfectly simple idea, but it didn’t compute. I did not know that
love is not a feeling, it is a verb…
an action.
Up until recently, I didn’t even know I was even in the room. Parts of me were, but the parts I had disowned were in exile and the former co-dependent in me was on automatic pilot trying to control every one else’s feelings — except my own.
When I break down what actions then, are essential to self-love.
One of the most important one, to me, is to take the time to get to know myself by
listening,

to myself.
