“The idea is to write it so that people hear it and it slides through the brain and goes straight to the heart.” —Maya Angelou
There are so many moments in our lives that are origin stories — as if we threw a pebble into a lake and watched the ripples vibrate outwards into the story of our lives.
My origin story of writing poetry started with the day my friend, Iana Velez gave me a writing journal for my 9th birthday. It was so, so, so pretty! I love to remember my awe when I first held it in my hands — the fuzzy black cover, the silver embossed unicorn…. my gasp, my sigh…
It was the same year a poet visited our funky elementary school in Greenwich Village and told a room full of kids something like, “Poetry is not good or bad or right or wrong. The job of poetry is to touch someone’s heart.” I was in third grade, state testing was in full swing, I was in trouble a lot because I was considered a spacey kid… so when I heard these words and received this journal, I was hooked.
And no matter where life brought me or whatever else I became interested in, whether I was studying film, pursuing acting, working in the publishing industry, or starting a health coaching business, poetry was always with me like a friend who always welcomed a call from me no matter how long it had been since I called.
So today, as I honor the gift of poetry and everyone who has supported me along the way, I am sharing some poems outside of my yoga poetry collection with my paid subscribers.
It is my way of giving a little extra to say thank you for your faith in me. For my other dear subscribers, I can’t help but share one poem with you about being lovable no matter what.
