A Poem for Rabbit Pose
"... the ball / of worry in my belly suddenly awakening / to how everything in this world can be full / of so much light...." - from Rabbit Pose by Corie Feiner
Rabbit Pose is a super special pose to me.
It is the pose my son would make when he didn’t want to do his schoolwork or anything else I asked him to do. Before I practiced yoga, I would interpret this forehead to the floor squirm as a sign of disrespect and “fussing.” Unknowingly, I would tell him to stop and sit up straight.
Until the day I learned about Rabbit Pose…..
…and realized he was not “acting out,” but was upset and trying to regulate his nervous system. Naturally, without any training. He knew what to do.
I went from discouraging his upside down squirm to to empathizing with him and joining him until we could figure out how to do what was before us with understanding, acceptance, and grace.
