Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway
Recently, I took my son out for a bike ride. He has not moved his body fully in weeks as he was engrossed in a project and it took its toll on his physical and emotional health.
Within minutes of setting out for a long overdue ride, we reached a narrow path that was full of wildflowers and bumblebees. He hesitated. His fear of bees is an old one (and he is not comforted by my delight in seeing pollinators at all).
He did not want to bike through and asked me to go a different way. I knew I had to say no — in a loving way.
He hemmed and hawed and expressed regret at having made the decision to come with me. I listened and nodded. It made sense. I, too, get stuck in feelings of fear and helplessness until I either give up or give in to the situation.
Suddenly, he shook his head and said, “What am I doing? F**k it!”
